Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to act decisively. He highlighted concerns over overseas players who quit the Indian Premier League (IPL) mid-season, only to feature in other cricketing commitments elsewhere.

Gavaskar specifically called for strict measures against individuals who quit the IPL season prematurely. His concern arises when these players subsequently participate in other professional leagues or international fixtures, potentially disregarding their initial IPL franchise commitments.

Proposed Punishments Detailed

The legendary former India captain outlined potential penalties for such conduct. He recommended imposing outright bans on these players, preventing their future IPL participation. Additionally, Gavaskar suggested implementing significant fee cuts, directly impacting their earnings from the tournament.

Gavaskar's appeal to the BCCI also emphasized the critical need to protect the IPL franchises. He highlighted the substantial financial investments made by these teams, which are jeopardized when key overseas players withdraw unexpectedly mid-season.

Safeguarding Franchise Interests

The former opening batsman underscored that franchises incur considerable expenses acquiring and retaining top international talent. Such premature departures directly impact team performance and can cause significant financial burdens for the owners.

He stressed that the BCCI, as the governing body for Indian cricket and IPL administrator, has a duty to safeguard franchise interests. This involves establishing clear contractual obligations and robust deterrents to maintain the league's integrity and fairness.

Call for Policy Enforcement

Gavaskar's strong statement serves as a clear call for the BCCI to formulate and enforce specific policies to address this recurring issue. His recommendations aim to ensure that commitments made to IPL teams are honored throughout the entire duration of the season.
