In a significant shift from their original strategy, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has reportedly decided to allow its World Test Championship (WTC) final players to remain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) until its revised conclusion on June 3. This marks a reversal from CSA’s earlier stance, where players were expected to report for WTC preparations by May 26.
CSA PUSHES BACK WTC CAMP AMID IPL RESCHEDULING
The IPL 2025 season, which faced a mid-season suspension and is now set to resume on May 17, will wrap up on June 3. In light of this revised schedule, CSA’s director of cricket, Enoch Nkwe, confirmed that South Africa's WTC squad will now begin their preparatory camp only after the IPL concludes.
Initially, Nkwe stated that May 26 would remain the latest reporting date for South African players, reaffirming CSA’s commitment to early preparation for the marquee final against Australia. However, he later corrected his statement, citing developments beyond his control.
"Correction – the squad will resume training for the game on June 3rd," Nkwe clarified. "The matter is being discussed at a higher level. At ground level, we are focusing on preparations for the WTC final."
IMPACT ON WARM-UP PLANS AND TEAM COMPOSITION
This delayed start to WTC preparations could affect South Africa’s informal warm-up fixture against Zimbabwe, previously scheduled to begin on June 3 in Arundel, England. The logistical overlap now puts the feasibility of that match in question.
A total of eight South African players involved in the WTC final are currently active in the IPL. Notable names include Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Tristan Stubbs, and Ryan Rickelton — all considered vital to South Africa’s campaign at Lord’s. Their continued IPL participation indicates a cooperative agreement between CSA, the BCCI, and IPL franchises.
AUSTRALIA HOLDS FIRM ON EARLY RECALL POLICY
While CSA has opted for flexibility, Cricket Australia (CA) is reportedly maintaining its original plan to recall its five IPL-bound players ahead of the WTC final. CA's approach underlines a strategic emphasis on winning back-to-back WTC titles.
There is speculation that the influence of IPL franchise owners, who also control SA20 teams, may have played a role in CSA's decision to allow South African players to fulfill their IPL commitments before shifting focus to the national cause.
COUNTDOWN TO THE WTC FINAL
The WTC final is set to begin on June 11 at Lord’s. With South African players joining the preparatory camp only a week prior, the team faces a condensed buildup compared to their Australian counterparts. Whether the high-intensity IPL matches will benefit or hinder South Africa’s readiness remains to be seen.
