In a historic finale at Hobart's Bellerive Oval on January 27, 2025, the Hobart Hurricanes clinched their maiden Big Bash League (BBL) title, defeating the Sydney Thunder by seven wickets. Central to this triumph was a record-equalling century by 23-year-old opener Mitchell Owen, whose explosive innings secured his place in BBL history.

Match Overview

The Sydney Thunder, led by captain David Warner, set a formidable target of 182 runs. Warner contributed a brisk 48, while Jason Sangha top-scored with 67. However, the Hurricanes' bowlers, notably Nathan Ellis and Riley Meredith, each claiming three wickets, managed to contain the Thunder's lineup.

Owen's Record-Breaking Innings

Chasing 183, the Hurricanes' response was nothing short of spectacular. Mitchell Owen launched an aggressive assault on the Thunder's bowlers, reaching his half-century in just 16 balls—the joint third-fastest in BBL history. He continued this blistering pace, achieving his century off 39 deliveries, thereby equalling the record for the fastest BBL century, previously set by Craig Simmons in 2014.

Owen's final tally was 108 runs from 42 balls, featuring 11 sixes and six fours. His innings not only decimated the opposition but also enthralled the home crowd, culminating in a standing ovation as he departed the field.

Post-Match Reflections

Reflecting on the win, Owen described the experience as "super special" and a "childhood dream" come true. His remarkable performance not only secured the championship for the Hurricanes but also etched his name in the annals of T20 cricket history.
