de Lange, in his younger days was a javelin thrower. Most of his coaches feel that the ability to bowl fast with short run-ups has come from his javelin-throwing days. de Lange comes from the northern town of Tzaneen and was first spotted by the scouts from Northerns Provincial Union. He made his first-class debut in 2011-12 for Easterns.
After playing 13 first-class games, de Lange was picked for the A side to take on Australia, he impressed in that series by taking a 5-wicket haul in Potchefstroom. The selectors knew his potential and selected him for the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka in 2011, he repaid the faith with a 7-wicket haul on debut. However, since then he has been marred by injuries and has only played one other Test.
de Lange also played in the Indian T20 League for Kolkata in 2012 and was later picked by Mumbai Indians in 2014.
