As the Rajasthan Royals gear up for IPL 2026, the franchise has begun a major shift in its portfolio by returning a familiar leader whom they felt comfortable with. RR officially announced Kumar Sangakkara as their new head coach, while also continuing his duty as Director of Cricket, and returning from four seasons in the latter position. The decision comes after a ninth-place finish this past season in IPL 2025, and ended Dravid’s one-year tenure as head coach.

A REPUTABLE LEADER IS BACK.

Sangakkara was the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals from 2021 to 2024. He played a critical role in restoring credibility in the competition while establishing the team identity. Sangakkara led the Rajasthan Royals to the IPL 2022 finals, set the team up for the IPL 2024 playoffs, and led the team to more consistent performances and identity. However, genuine and honest competition fall short in 2025, and it was time for a new leadership. Dravid was hired for the 2025 season, and then found it appropriate to relinquish that contract prior to the IPL 2026 season.

FRANCHISE STATEMENT.

The lead team owner of RR, Manoj Badale, said he is excited to have Kumar Sangakkara return as head coach:

We are very happy to have Kumar return as head coach. His institutional knowledge of the team, his leadership and his strong connection with the Royals culture made him the person, we felt, to lead the team moving forward. Kumar's clarity, composure and cricket intellect have always earned our trust; they will create the same level of confidence as we start a new chapter.

REVISED COACHING MODEL

The Royals have also revamped their support staff with several significant shifts. Vikram Rathour has transitioned from batting consultant to lead assistant coach. He will now manage and direct batting development and tactical plans. Shane Bond has remained as fast bowling coach to create some continuity within the pace unit. Trevor Penney rejoins the club as assistant coach and Sid Lahiri continues in the role of Performance Coach; all of this offers an overall strengthening of the coaching group.
