India’s star opener Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket but affirmed his commitment to the One Day International (ODI) format, setting his sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
END OF AN ERA IN TEST CRICKET
On May 7, during the ongoing IPL 2025 season, 38-year-old Rohit Sharma shared a heartfelt message on Instagram announcing his retirement from Test cricket. This decision marks the end of a significant chapter in his career, where he played a key role as a dependable top-order batsman and occasional captain in the red-ball format.
FOCUS SHIFTS TO ODI GLORY
Having already retired from T20 Internationals after leading India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit is now determined to pursue one final mission in international cricket—winning the ODI World Cup in 2027. The tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
In a recent interview with journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit expressed his strong desire to be part of India’s campaign in 2027.
> “Zehen mein bilkul hai (It’s definitely on my mind),” Rohit said when asked about his plans for the 2027 World Cup.
> “Acha rahega agar aisa hua to (It would be great if that happens),” he added.
REFLECTING ON THE 2023 HEARTBREAK
Rohit also reflected on the disappointment of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India dominated the tournament with an unbeaten run before falling to Australia in the final. That loss remains a motivating factor for the veteran, who still dreams of lifting the coveted 50-over trophy.
ROHIT SHARMA’S ICC TROPHY CABINET
Over his illustrious career, Rohit Sharma has secured four ICC titles:
T20 World Cup– 2007, 2024
Champions Trophy – 2013, 2025
Two of those victories (T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025) came under his leadership. However, his dream of winning the ICC World Test Championship fell just short, with India reaching the final in 2023 but not clinching the title.
Notably, Rohit was not part of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad but has since played in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 editions, with his most successful campaign being the 2023 run to the final.
ODI LEGACY AND CAREER MILESTONES
Rohit Sharma has firmly established himself as one of the greatest ODI players in cricket history. His career numbers are staggering:
Matches: 273
Runs: 11,168
Average: 48.77
Centuries: 32 (including 3 double centuries)
Highest Score: 264 – the highest individual score in ODI history
IPL 2025: ROHIT IN FORM FOR MUMBAI INDIANS
Currently representing the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 season, Rohit continues to perform at a high level. So far, he has amassed 300 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 152.28 and an average of 30.00, with three half-centuries to his name.
Mumbai Indians, after a slow start, have made a strong comeback and currently sit fourth on the points table with 14 points from 12 matches. They are set to face Punjab Kings on Sunday, May 11, in a crucial match that could solidify their spot in the playoffs.
