Despite ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has made a bold statement regarding his future in franchise cricket. Amir revealed that he is close to securing an opportunity to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by 2026, and even expressed a willingness to prioritize the IPL over Pakistan’s own T20 tournament, the Pakistan Super League (PSL), if both events were to overlap.
Amir: “I Will Definitely Play in the IPL if Given the Chance”
Currently representing the Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing PSL 2025, Amir shared his thoughts in an interview with Geo News. When asked whether he would choose the PSL or IPL in case of a scheduling conflict, the 32-year-old didn’t hesitate with his response.
> “Honestly, if I get the opportunity, I'll definitely play in the IPL. I'm saying this openly. But if I don't get a chance, then I will play in the PSL. By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not? I will play in the IPL,” said Amir.
PSL vs IPL: WHAT HAPPENS IF DATES CLASH?
Amir explained that the likelihood of a scheduling conflict between the two tournaments is low, especially with the ICC Champions Trophy also on the calendar. However, he made it clear that whichever league picks him first will determine where he plays.
> “I don't think IPL and PSL will clash next year. Because this year, the ICC Champions Trophy was everything. If I get picked in PSL first, then I can't pull out, as I will be banned from the tournament. If I get picked in IPL first, then I can't withdraw from that either. It all depends on which draft or auction happens first.”
REALITY CHECK: CAN AMIR REALISTICALLY PLAY IN THE IPL?
While Amir’s optimism about playing in the IPL is evident, the reality is far more complex. Due to longstanding diplomatic tensions and the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack in Kashmir, which tragically resulted in the deaths of over 26 Indian citizens, the chances of Pakistani players participating in the IPL remain slim.
Following the incident, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla stated that there was no possibility of resuming bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan, effectively continuing the ban on Pakistani players in the IPL.
CONCLUSION
Mohammad Amir’s comments reflect his ambition to compete in one of the world’s biggest T20 leagues, but geopolitical challenges continue to be a major roadblock. Whether or not the former Pakistan star will be seen in IPL colours remains uncertain—but for now, his intent is loud and clear.
