The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have expressed disappointment over the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) recent decision to allow 120 minutes of extra time for rain-affected league matches, calling the move "ad hoc" and poorly timed. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, KKR believes the new rule could have significantly impacted their chances of qualifying for the playoffs—had it been introduced earlier.

NEW RULE INTRODUCED AMID MONSOON THREAT

The IPL Governing Council updated the playing conditions midway through the season, extending the permitted extra time from one hour to two hours for the final nine league matches. The change was aimed at maximizing the likelihood of full 20-over contests as monsoon conditions loomed large.

Previously, only playoff matches were granted a two-hour buffer, while league games were restricted to just one additional hour in case of delays.

KKR’S RESPONSE: "INCONSISTENCY IN APPLICATION"

In an email shared with all ten franchises, IPL Chief Operating Officer Hemang Amin explained that the rule modification was prompted by increasing rain risks. However, KKR CEO Venky Mysore responded critically, questioning why the expanded extra time wasn't implemented when the tournament resumed after a pause due to political tensions between India and Pakistan.

“While these mid-season changes may be necessary under the circumstances, one would have expected more consistency in the way such changes are being applied,” Mysore wrote in the email.

MISSED OPPORTUNITY IN WASHED-OUT GAME AGAINST RCB

Mysore pointed to the KKR vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru match on May 17—the first game after the tournament resumed—as a missed opportunity. The game in Bengaluru was abandoned due to heavy rain without a single ball being bowled, and both teams were awarded one point each.

The match was officially called off at 10:26 PM, although the original cut-off time was 10:56 PM. According to Mysore, the newly introduced two-hour window could have allowed enough time for at least a five-over-per-side contest.

WASH-OUT ENDED OUR PLAYOFF HOPES

“The forecast clearly indicated a high chance of rain that day,” Mysore noted. “If the additional 120 minutes had been available then, there might have been an opportunity to get a shortened game in. That could have made a big difference for us.”

He emphasized that the abrupt nature of the rule change had serious implications for KKR’s campaign. “The wash-out ended KKR's chances of making the playoffs. Such ad hoc decisions and inconsistency in their application are not appropriate for a tournament of this stature. I’m sure you can understand why we feel aggrieved.”
