India's premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is likely to be rested for the second Test against England, starting July 2 at Edgbaston, as part of a planned workload management strategy. According to a report by The Indian Express, this decision comes after Bumrah’s heavy workload in the opening Test at Headingley, where he bowled over 44 overs across two innings.

RETURN TO RED-BALL CRICKET AND PERFORMANCE IN LEEDS

Bumrah recently made his return to Test cricket following an extended injury layoff due to a back issue. Despite the setback India faced in Leeds, where they lost the match by five wickets, Bumrah was a standout performer. He bowled 24.4 overs in the first innings and picked up a brilliant five-wicket haul—his 14th in Test cricket.

Unfortunately, his efforts were undermined by lacklustre fielding, with three catches dropped off his bowling alone. Notably, England’s opener Harry Brook was given three lifelines before he was eventually dismissed for 99.

INDIA’S BOWLING STRUGGLES EXPOSED

The loss in Leeds highlighted a broader issue within India’s bowling unit. Bumrah's consistency and control stood in stark contrast to the erratic performances of his fellow pacers Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur all of whom failed to maintain pressure or deliver breakthroughs when needed.

India’s subpar fielding further compounded the problem, and their inability to support Bumrah effectively became a decisive factor in the match outcome.

GAMBHIR STRESSES ROTATION AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Ahead of the series, head coach Gautam Gambhir had made it clear that Bumrah would not be playing all five Tests. Stressing the importance of rotation and managing fitness, Gambhir said after the first Test:

> “If we leave out Bumrah and Siraj, there is not much experience in the line-up, but we need to back these young bowlers—they have talent. This pace attack features one bowler with four Tests under his belt, another with two, and one yet to debut.”

SELECTION HEADACHES AHEAD OF SECOND TEST

With just a four-day gap between the second and third Tests—the latter set to be played at the iconic Lord’s—team management is prioritising Bumrah’s availability for the long haul rather than risking fatigue early in the series.

Bumrah’s expected absence, however, adds pressure on an already underperforming bowling unit. Mohammed Siraj is likely to lead the attack in Edgbaston, but his quiet outing in Leeds raises concerns. India might look to bring in left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh or add variety with wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

CAPTAINCY UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

Bumrah's absence could also place an additional burden on young captain Shubman Gill. His decisions regarding bowling rotations and field placements were questioned during the Headingley defeat, and with India now trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, the pressure is mounting.

The second Test at Edgbaston will be a crucial one for India not only to bounce back in the series but also to see how they cope without their bowling spearhead.
