Abbas Ali Baig was known for his exploits, while playing for Hyderabad in First-Class cricket. However, the elegant batsman played only 10 Tests for India. One of his greatest achievements came in his debut Test. In his first Test against England at Old Trafford in 1959, he became the youngest to amass a ton on Test debut. He also was the first one to achieve that feat outside India.
However, opportunities to play for the country were few and far between. In the limited opportunities he got, Baig did perform to expectations against Australia in 1959. It was his failure to deliver the goods in the Test series against Pakistan that saw him finding himself in the wilderness.
Baig continued to score heavily in the domestic circuit and made a welcome return to the Test side when India took on West Indies in 1966. He though, struggled to make an impact in the two Tests he played in that series and unfortunately, never again wore the white flannels for his country. Yes, Baig was selected for the tour of England in 1971, but was not picked for any of the Tests.
