In a season already teetering on the edge, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were handed a heavy blow to their playoff aspirations with a demoralizing nine-wicket defeat to arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday. The loss leaves CSK languishing near the bottom of the points table, having managed just two wins from eight matches.
MUMBAI MAULING: A ONE-SIDED AFFAIR
Chasing a competitive 177-run target, MI made light work of the total, cruising to victory with 26 balls to spare. Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were in sublime touch, dismantling CSK’s bowling attack with ease.
Even the experienced spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin couldn’t turn things around, finding little assistance from the pitch. CSK looked bereft of answers — both in terms of planning and execution — as their bowling lacked both penetration and control.
FLASHES OF RESISTANCE, BUT CRACKS REMAIN
Despite the defeat, there were a few bright spots for CSK. Debutant Ayush Mhatre impressed with a brisk cameo, while Jadeja and Shivam Dube chipped in with fighting half-centuries. However, these efforts only papered over the deeper issues plaguing the side, especially with the ball and in the field.
DHONI’S BLUNT ASSESSMENT:
FOCUS SHIFTS TO THE FUTURE
In the post-match interview, MS Dhoni — who returned to captaincy duties after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury — did not sugarcoat the team’s performance. Known for his straight talk, Dhoni emphasized the need for calm evaluation and long-term planning.
> “We are successful because we play good cricket. When we’re not doing that, it’s important not to get emotional,” he said. “Catches will help, of course, but beyond that, we’re trying to plug the holes. With the remaining games, we’ll take it one at a time, and if we don’t make it to the playoffs, the priority is to lock in a solid combination for next year.”
A SECURED XI OVER A REVOLVING DOOR
Dhoni hinted that while playoff qualification remains the immediate goal, the bigger focus could soon shift to building a reliable core for the 2026 IPL season.
> “You don’t want to make too many changes year after year. The aim is to qualify, but if we don’t, then at least identify a secured playing XI for next year and come back stronger.”
WHAT WENT WRONG: DHONI BREAKS DOWN THE DEFEAT
Reflecting on the loss, Dhoni acknowledged that CSK were off the mark in multiple departments.
> “We were quite below par. We knew dew would play a role in the second half. MI started their death bowling early with Bumrah, and we should have responded by accelerating sooner. We missed out on valuable runs in the slog overs,” he said.
CSK’S ROAD AHEAD: DO OR DIE
With only six league games remaining, CSK must now win all of them to keep their playoff hopes alive. But whether this side has the firepower to mount such a comeback remains to be seen.
As Dhoni rightly pointed out — if not this year, then it's time to regroup, rebuild, and return stronger next season.
