Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has credited Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for offering him timely support during one of the most challenging phases of his career. Just a day before Green was scheduled to undergo back surgery, he received an unexpected but heartwarming message from Bumrah a gesture that gave him immense reassurance and belief in his recovery.

BUMRAH REACHES OUT DURING INDIA’S TEST SERIES

The gesture came while Bumrah was in the middle of India’s Test series against New Zealand. Despite his national duties, the Indian spearhead made time to contact Green, who was preparing for a crucial back operation the same procedure Bumrah himself had undergone 18 months earlier.

“That was really special. It makes you feel a lot better about everything,” said Green in a conversation with Cricbuzz. “I didn’t get to play with him for the Mumbai Indians, but that was our connection. I had spent a bit of time with him there.”

Green also acknowledged how seeing Bumrah’s post-surgery performances inspired confidence in him:

> “To get someone like him to reach out, and then to watch him during the summer… it filled me with a lot of confidence.”

INJURY TIMELINE: GREEN AND BUMRAH’S PARALLEL STRUGGLES

Both Bumrah and Green have had their share of injury setbacks. While Green underwent back surgery in 2024, keeping him out of action for over six months, Bumrah had previously dealt with a similar injury that sidelined him for a significant period.

Earlier this year, Bumrah suffered a back spasm during the Sydney Test against Australia, which ruled him out for three months and made him miss the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Meanwhile, Green’s recovery meant he missed Australia’s home season, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where the Aussies secured a historic 3-1 series win over India.

IPL ABSENCES AND TEAM CHANGES

During the 2023 IPL season, Green was part of the Mumbai Indians squad but didn’t get to share the field with Bumrah, who was recovering from his injury at the time. Ahead of the 2024 season, Green was traded to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) but had to skip the tournament due to his surgery and ongoing rehabilitation.

RETURN AHEAD OF WTC FINAL AT LORD’S

Fully fit and eager to return, Green is now part of the Australian squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, to be held at Lord’s from June 11–15, with June 16 marked as a reserve day.

This will be South Africa’s first appearance in a WTC final, while Australia will be aiming to defend their title, having beaten India in the 2023 final at The Oval under Pat Cummins’ captaincy.

GREEN REFLECTS ON TIME AWAY FROM THE GAME

Reflecting on his time on the sidelines, Green admitted the mental challenge of watching his teammates celebrate victories without being part of the action.

> “The times when you see the guys celebrating in the dressing room or just having a really good day — knowing the type of feeling you’ll have — makes you want to be there,” he said. “But at the same time, there were moments when I went, ‘Jasprit looks pretty good.’”

BUMRAH: INDIA’S STANDOUT PERFORMER DESPITE SERIES LOSS

Although India lost the recent five-match series against Australia, Jasprit Bumrah stood out with a remarkable performance, finishing with 32 wickets the most by any bowler in the series. His return to full fitness and dominant form post-surgery served as a source of inspiration for Green and others battling similar setbacks.

CONCLUSION

Cameron Green’s comeback is not just a personal milestone but a reminder of how small acts of support like Bumrah’s message can have a significant impact. As Green steps onto the field at Lord’s, he does so not just with a healed back, but also with renewed confidence, fueled in part by a competitor-turned-mentor from across the border.
